I've never seen the sense in introducing a new writer in hardcover. If you're going to try to get people to try someone they've never read before, it's counter-intuitive to sell it at the highest price.

I know some people prefer the hardcover (and as a bookseller, I know you prefer the higher value of the sale) but the customer who'll only buy in hardcover is not a big enough segment of the market to keep a writer's kids in shoes.

Another reason I've heard for releasing first in HC is that newspaper reviewers won't review paperbacks. But with fewer and fewer newspaper reviewers, this is becoming a less compelling argument, IMHO.

I think it's Bleak House who releases a limited edition HC for the HC fans AND the PB at the same time. And they seem to be expanding, so maybe they're doing something right.

Trade paperbacks can get reviewed. Small Crimes was reviewed by the Washington Post, NPR, Boston Globe, Sun-Sentinel, Lansing State Journal, London Times, Guardian, Sunday Express.

What I think is a big problem with eBooks is that some books are meant to disposable. If I'm traveling or taking a book to the beach, I'm not all that concerned if the book gets damaged--but if I have an expensive device, like a Kindle, I sure would be. And if I'm buying a book to keep and cherish, I want a physical book that I can put on my bookcase. I can see the advantage of a kindle device for students, or even editors, who need to load up dozens of books to be able to access, but it will be interesting to see how the average reader will respond after they've lost or damaged their first or second Kindle how much they're going to want to invest in another one. Another huge disadvantage is of course Amazon ends up with a monopoly if eBooks take over. The one big advantage for an eBook, at least at my age, is being able to increase the font size.
